Opposition is a first person shooter game, the goal of which is to break current commercial first person paradigms in order to prove the market potential of a first person shooter on its game-play alone.  To do this the focus of Opposition is its game-play rather than story or graphical elements. It was built using Valve’s Source engine. Source is the same engine that was used to create the immensely successful games Counter-Strike and Half-life 2.

The goal of Opposition is to provide a game featuring many unique features, as well as create a fun and novel game-play.  The concept for the game is simple, a contest between technology and numbers. One team has superior weaponry whereas the other team has superior numbers. The player plays as the team with superior weaponry while non player characters fulfill the role of the other team.  The unique aspect of this design will come from the fact that there is no static story or character driving the game.  Instead, Opposition will be a collection of hostile situations involving two teams creating a conflict between technology and numbers.

Commercial game development depends upon grass root developments to shape the way future games are designed. This is due to a commercial company’s responsibility to its share-holders. A commercial company can not with good conscience attempt to reshape current development; instead they are forced to produce what has a proven track record. In this way Opposition hopes to reshape current first person shooter development.
